Short story analysis
How do you critically, carefully read stories? What is a critical analysis? How do you analyze an author's story? In this paper, you will analyze an author’s work using textual evidence from the story in MLA parenthetical author page citation. Pay attention to what the author’s themes are, how he or she uses the elements of story writing to develop those themes.
You may use a close reading of the text (how does the setting, word choice, among others, allow the author to advance his themes. You may also use a story to show it's an example of a critical theory or a literary period.
This paper:
Has 5 full pages in MLA format (Pay attention to use of print size, 10 or 12 size, and font)
Does NOT have a title page Does have a works cited page with three (3) sources other than the story.
Has an interesting and complete introduction
Has an interesting and complete conclusion
Is based on a short story from class, from the text or from an author we have read in class.
Pays attention to not having fragments or run-on sentences
Pays attention to subject/verb agreement and pronoun antecedent agreement ____________________________________________________________________________
An “A” paper will have four (4) drafts fully edited by the author and peers and, if desired, outside editors. It will have a complete introduction, complete conclusion, cited evidence from the short story(ies) . It will have only several spelling errors, only several errors in grammar/usage. A proper MLA format and works cited page should be evident.
A “B” paper will have four (4) drafts full edited by the author and peers and, if desired, outside editors. It will have an almost complete introduction, almost complete conclusion, cited evidence throughout from the short story(ies). It will have more than several spelling errors, more than several errors in grammar/usage. A proper MLA format and works cited page should be evident but maybe some format mistakes.
A “C” paper will have almost four (4) drafts showing lack of full editing by the author and peers and, if desired, outside editors. It will have a problematic introduction, problematic conclusion, not enough cited evidence throughout from the short story(ies). It will have too many spelling errors, too many errors in grammar/usage. A proper MLA format and works cited page should be evident but with format mistakes.
A “D” paper will not have four (4) drafts showing lack of editing by the author and peers and, if desired, outside editors. It will have a weak introduction, weak conclusion, hardly any cited evidence throughout from the short story(ies). It will have many spelling errors, many errors in grammar/usage. A proper MLA format and works cited page won’t be evident, with many format mistakes.
